Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of Study
It may also be defined as, ‘Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space and change; it has historically developed, through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, from counting, calculation, measurement, and the study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Knowing mathematics can be personally satisfying and empowering. The underpinnings of everyday life are increasingly mathematical and technological. For instance, making purchasing decisions, choosing insurance or health plans, and voting knowledgeably all call for quantitative sophistication.
Exercise affects the brain on multiple fronts. It increases heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain. It also aids the bodily release of a plethora of hormones, all of which participate in aiding and providing a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells. Exercise stimulates the brain plasticity by stimulating growth of new connections between cells in a wide array of important cortical areas of the brain. Recent research from UCLA demonstrated that exercise increased growth factors in the brain—making it easier for the brain to grow new neuronal connections.
From a behavioral perspective, the same antidepressant-like effects associated with “runner’s high” found in humans is associated with a drop in stress hormones. A study from Stockholm showed that the antidepressant effect of running was also associated with more cell growth in the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for learning and memory.
What is mathematics?’ The answer to this question is of course complex; there are elaborate elucidations, some excellent, on the subject but inevitably, even the best accounts give incomplete answers. Mathematics is a branch of science, which deals with numbers and their operations. It involves calculation, computation, solving of problems. Its dictionary meaning states that, ‘Mathematics is the science of numbers and space’ or ‘Mathematics is the science of measurement, quantity and magnitude’. It is exact, precise, systematic and a logical subject. Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that help us to understand the world around us.
Involvement in structured athletic activities is said to expand the range of “social, physical, and intellectual skills,” leading the student’s better academic performances (Rees & Sabia, 2010). However, critics observed that participation in sports may reduce the time available for studying and earning since students-athletes were having difficulties in juggling their time between schedules for sports training and their academic responsibilities (Montecalbo-Ignacio, et al., 2017).
Sports is a human activity capable of achieving a result requiring exertion or physical skill, which, by its nature and organization, is a competitive and is generally accepted as being a sport. (Australian Sports Comission, ASC). Sports had always provided a source of structure to the student; discipline, hard work, winning and losing with dignity, the importance of team work and of preparation. These were the lessons that we had learned from our parents growing up and sports provided an opportunity to live them. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to inform people that sports can influence mathematical and its behavior. Improving the mathematical and technological achievement can give students both an opportunity to discover and invent new knowledge and a chance to practice what they have learned.
Statement of the Problem
This study was conceptualized to determine the influence of students sports on their behavior and mathematics grade. Specially, the study sought answers the following:
- What is the perception of respondents towards their sports involvement?
- What are the levels of students sports club members in terms of:
2.1 behavior and conduct
2.2 mathematics grade
3. Is there a significant influence of students’ sport in involvement in students level of:
3.1 behavior conduct
3.2 mathematics grade
4. Is there a significant difference in sports club members’ level of behavioral and mathematics grades when the followings are considered
4.1 grade level
4.2 gender
4.3 kind of sport
Research Hypothesis
There is no significant influence of student sports involvement and mathematics grade.
1. behavior and conduct grade
2. mathematics grade
Significance of the Study
The outcomes of this research are significant to the following areas:
STUDENT ATHLETES. This research will help the students in identifying their growth both as a student and help them track the benefits and disadvantages of being sports inclined to their behavior as a student. This will be a guide to them as they practice improving their physical and academic skills.
TEACHERS. This research will help out the teachers, specifically Mathematics teachers to be aware of student athletes’ current situation on their studies and help the students improve the areas which they are lacking in.
PARENTS. Like the teachers, the parents too will understand behavioral act. The given data would help them formulate to guide their children to balance both academic and physical skills. The findings would help them learn the actions of their children.
RESEARCH. The findings of this study will be an addition to the body of the researches on student’s behavior, sports involvement effectiveness and mathematics academic achievement.
Scope and Delimitation
This investigation will be conducted to determine any significant influences of student’s social involvement on their behavior and mathematics Grade. This study will be undertaken at the Adventist University of the Philippines Academy 2nd semester SY 2018-19 among sports member of all levels.
The differences in time schedules could hinder the respondents from answering the survey questionnaires honestly or take time to read the questions, so the researchers ensured that the survey questionnaires will be given to the respondents ahead of time. Also, it is delimited to students who are not involved.
The general intent of this study is to know the influence of students sports involvement on their behavior and mathematics grade. This study will mainly identify and asses’ different factors that affect the student’s behavior and mathematics grade. Initially, this study will confine itself through a survey given to sports club members of all level in the Adventist University of the Philippines Academy 2nd semester SY 2018-19. Its main purpose is to identify the common problems that the proponents encounter and to propose a possible solutions regarding this problem.
